The Saints are in the Super Bowl!

Wow, I can’t believe it. I can honestly say that I never thought I would see this day. The Saints are going to the super bowl. As a saints fan since birth, it’s unfathomable that our Saints have clawed their way to the top of the league.

I can remember as a kid following all the Saints players that I thought of as heroes – Archie Manning, Earl Campbell, Sam Mills, Bobby Hebert, Dalton Hilliard. There was a time in the early / mid 80s when fans with paper bags over heads were the norm in the superdome. It really never bothered me, as a young boy they were my heroes. I would try to throw like Archie and run like Earl.

Later it seems as though we had turned the corner with Jim Mora at the helm. Lots of 10+ win seasons in the late 80s but when the playoffs came around, the saints never got it done. The saints didn’t even win a playoff game until 2000. Folks that’s 33 years in the league without a playoff win. Unbelievable.

Then here comes Drew Brees. After being unceremoniously traded from San Diego (where he had a good run), Drew arrived in Who Dat nation and lit it up. He’s not big, he’s not tall, he’s not fast, he has average arm strength. All he does is win. He won at Purdue, he won for the Chargers and he wins as a Saint. The guy is money.

Most people I know in Louisiana gave up on the Saints multiple times, but we keep coming back. Especially after hurricane Katrina, the Saints are something that we can believe in. Something the city can rally around and call their own. There’s just one more thing that we have to ask. Bring home a championship next Sunday!
